Music Theatre Masterclass Workshop
A free entry Workshop offered to all entrants in Music Theatre classes during Festival 26.
The Workshop will take place at St Paul’s Church, Armitage Bridge, Huddersfield HD4 7PD on Saturday 31st October 2026
Two sessions: -
There will be a short break in the middle of each session.
Session One – 09.00 to 13.00 - Y7 to 9 inclusive
Session Two – 14.00 to 17.00 - Y10 to 13 inclusive
Each entrant will be required to select and submit, in advance, one musical piece they would like to work on.
A copy of the item must be sent to Di Schofield at [email protected] by Friday, 16th October 2026.
Steven Roberts, an experienced adjudicator for many years and also Chair of the Huddersfield Mrs Sunderland Festival, will lead the workshop. He will provide advice and coaching to each individual performer.
Steven will be supported by the experienced accompanist Catherine Hall-Smith.
Performers do not need to have entered a Vocal class in Festival 2027 to be eligible for a place in the Masterclass Workshop. Successful applicants will be informed by phone and/or email.
Closing Date for entries - 30th September 2026.
It is intended that entrants will be selected generally on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
There will be the option of a waiting list for unsuccessful applicants
Maximum of 12 performers in each session.

Workshop Leader: Thom Meredith
Thom has led previous Adult Workshops with great success and is well known throughout the North of England as a conductor and baritone soloist. Formerly Principal of Musica Kirklees, Thom now focuses on performing and conducting. He is Musical Director of the renowned Colne Valley Male Voice Choir and the Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir.

An opportunity to build confidence in speaking and performance skills. The adjudicator, Vivienne Redford will provide supportive advice and coaching.
Your choice of verse, sonnet or Shakespeare
Vivienne Redford has been a Speech & Drama teacher and Director for over 35 years, has trained with LAMDA and is now a leading international LAMDA examiner and festival adjudicator – regularly assessing dramatic work from students across the world.
Performers must enter at least one other drama class to be eligible for a place in this masterclass.

A repeat of our exciting and popular event aimed at attracting older adults to disco dance and ‘bop’ the afternoon away!
With strictly dance music from the 50s,60s,70s,80s,90s plus several more recent dance tunes included, it will prove to be an enjoyable, active, and nostalgic afternoon.
A local professional DJ will entertain, and the session will also feature a ‘live’ set from ‘U3 Band’.

YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
Sunday 21 February 2027
This contest is intended for young musicians of a high standard (at least Grade 8 or equivalent), including those aiming towards, or just beginning, a professional career in music. The competition will be open to instrumentalists and vocalists in alternate years. In 2027 it will be for vocalists (Instrumentalists will be back in 2028). The prize money should be used for their musical development.
First Place £1,000. Second Place £500. Third Place £300
Contestants should be between the ages of 17 and 26 years inclusive on 31 December 2026 and currently resident in the United Kingdom.
Contestants should submit a programme of maximum 15 minutes’ duration. This does not include breaks between pieces or any spoken introductions. Pieces chosen must not be performed in any other part of the Huddersfield Mrs Sunderland Festival 2027. Credit will be given for a balanced and varied selection of pieces.
The winner will be announced at the end of the Contest and will be required to perform part of their programme at the Last Night of the Festival Concert in Huddersfield Town Hall on Saturday 27 February 2027, when the prize and trophy will be awarded.
NB Failure to appear at the Last Night of the Festival Concert on the final Saturday may result in forfeiture of the prize.
Accompanists - Contestants are encouraged to bring their own accompanist. If they are unable to do so, they may ask to use the services of the Festival’s official Accompanist. In this case, a fee may be payable for any rehearsal time, though not for the actual performance.
The Festival’s official Accompanist is Jonathan Fisher. He works with instrumentalists, singers and chamber groups, covering a huge spectrum of repertoire from the early baroque to the present day. He is Pianist-in-Residence at the University of Huddersfield, and Staff Pianist at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Full details concerning music copying can be found in the Huddersfield Mrs Sunderland Festival Syllabus under Festival Rules (Copyright Regulations). Photocopies will only be accepted if presented in a fully legible condition, properly attached and labelled. The original piece of music must be brought on the day of the contest.
Entries for the 2027 Contest are limited to the first 20 eligible applications which must be received by 12 noon on Saturday 5 December 2026
The acceptance of any entry is at the discretion of the Organisers. Any candidate whose entry is not accepted will be informed as soon as possible after the closing date.
Entry Fee - entry forms must be accompanied by the entry fee of £31. In the event of a candidate’s withdrawal from the contest the entry fee will not be refunded.

After the success of last year, we are thrilled again for you to join us in the Town Hall for our Mini Music Makers Workshops
This year we offer two different sessions:-
Session 1 (9.45 -10.30 am) Toddler session led by a Music Early Years specialist. Parents, carers and their toddlers will be led in a singing, playing and movement session, incorporating songs and rhymes. This session will encourage communication through music, which is fundamental for child development.
Session 2 (11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.) A baby sing and sign session led by Angela Joseph. Sing and Sign is an award winning music programme recommended by experts and loved by parents/carers and babies across the UK. We are fortunate to be able to offer it at this year’s festival. It will be a fun filled class that will help babies communicate BEFORE they start to speak.
These will be two morning sessions in the Old Court Room on Wednesday 24th February 2027. The registration fee is £5 per child. Registration is via the website www.mrssunderlandfestival.com

At the last festival, invited schools from Kirklees joined together in various dance, drama and musical activities and we hope they will all be back this year.
The day will start with a workshop led by Dark Horse Theatre Group, followed by the opportunity for students to showcase their skills in prepared performances.
An audience is welcome at no charge.
Tea Dance in conjunction with Kirklees Dementia Hub
A participation event with music in the atmospheric concert hall
Invited guests from various Dementia Support Groups and their supporters can enjoy the music, sing and - if they wish - dance to the music of their youth. Audience and performers will have the opportunity to meet and chat over tea and cakes. All participants, young and old, will benefit from this exciting event.

Huddersfield Mrs Sunderland 2027 Performing Arts Festival KS2 Singing Workshop
Welcome to the Mrs Sunderland KS2 Singing event for 2027: 5 6 7 8 - Let's Go Country! This years theme is country music where we will sing country classics such as Country Roads - Denver, 5 6 7 8 - Steps, Love Story - Swift and Nobody Knows - Lumineers just to name a few! The workshop will be led by the very talented Mrs Bennett from Musica Kirklees and accompanied by a live country band. Don't miss out, sign up fast to enjoy this once in a lifetime country experience! 25th February 2027 9.30 - 11.30pm. Registration is via the website and is £30 per school.
This KS2 workshop and concert will be on Thursday 25 February 2027. The morning workshop will run from 9.45am to 11.30am. Tickets on the door will cost £3 for adults, free for children. The evening concert will run from 7pm to 8pm. Tickets from the Town Hall box office will cost £5 (plus booking fee) for adults, free for children.
There will be a teacher training session on xxxxxxxxxxxxx 4.15pm to 5.30pm, at Lindley Junior School, George Street, Lindley, Huddersfield HD3 3LY, where we will learn the songs.
